 Wheeled Backpacks 

Recently wheeled backpacks have been taking the luggage industry by storm. All ages are now buying these wheeled backpacks whereas older non-wheeled models were just a favourite of backpackers, these new models now offer an aternative to a suitcase for everyone from backpackers to middle aged adventure seekers and even business travellers. These rolling backpacks can come in all shapes and sizes from carry on size to 85 litre large travel pack size and can feature extras like laptop compartments and detachable daypacks. Popular brands making wheeled backpacks and wheeled travel packs are Victorinox, High Sierra, Eagle Creek and Caribee. Our feature article looks at a few of the best models that are available in Australia.

 

Caribee

Australian luggage manufacturer Caribee have several popular wheeled backpacks including their Caribee Fast Track 75 or 85, Caribee Flight 70 or 80 and their Caribee Fusion carry on wheeled backpack.

The Caribee Fast Track is a wheeled travelpack that is available in 75 or 85 Litre sizes. It has an extendable handle and can be used as a pull along travel bag with the option to convert it to a travel pack when you release the zippered back panel to reveal a full harness system with waist and chest straps. A lot of wheeled backpacks on the market don't have either the waist or chest straps which is not good for your back if you are going to be using it as a backpack more than just occasionaly.

Remarkably the weight of the rolling backpack is only 4kg(75 Litre) and 4.5kg(85 Litre) which isn't much heavier than a regular travelpack. This is in part due to the dobby polymax fabric used in the construction of the wheeled backpack, this fabric is thin and light but is extremely tough due to its weave.

The wheels on the Fast Track are large and have treaded tyre's which are useful when wheeling the backpack over uneven ground or cobbled streets.

The interior of the bag is designed with packing in mind in the main section there are several pockets for smaller items and a detachable hanging toiletry bag there is also a seperate compartment at the base for laundry or shoes. Included with the travel pack is a smaller day pack that attaches to the front of the pack but can also be attached to the shoulder straps and worn on your front (good for security).

Overall the Caribee Fast Track is full of great design features and can be used equally well as a serious travel pack or wheeled bag.

The Caribee Flight is based on the Fast Track design but its harness system is improved so that it can be adjusted better, this is particularly useful for ladies and anyone medium height or shorter. The daypack is attached by zipping it to the front and this can also be secured with a padlock, the day pack on the Fast Track is clipped on. Perhaps the only difference in the which counts against the Flight against the Fast Track is that it does not have the sepearte shoe/laundry pocket at th base of the pack. The Caribee Fusion has been a long standing popular wheeled backpack that is now in its second version, it features a full harness with a waist strap as well as shoulder straps, this in itself sets it apart from most other carry on wheeled backpacks that only have the shoulder straps. In addition to this the back of the pack is concave which makes it more comfortable than straight backed rival backpacks. This harness system can be fully zipped away so that you can wheel it without any of the straps getting in the way. The trolley system is a monopole style which makes the bag particularly manouverable especially when rolling the bag forward.
